CUCKOONESS × 旗山侠隐 | One Drawing Per Day

During two quiet weeks in the mountains of Suichang, artist XinYi Selina Zhang (张心怡 CUCKOO) brought her project One Drawing Per Day to life within the wooden halls of Qi Shan Xia Yin(旗山侠隐).

The installation gathers 365 drawings, made one each day during the pandemic — a visual diary of solitude, emotion, and self-discovery. Hung along strings of hemp beneath a timber roof, these drawings became like breaths, each line a trace of an inner rhythm rediscovered.

Accompanying the works are artist-designed books — modular, tactile objects whose pages can be removed, hung, or shared — and 3D-printed vinyl sculptures derived from her ceramic figures. Together, they extend the drawings into space, form, and play.

In the quiet air of the mountains, One Drawing Per Day finds new meaning — transforming personal reflection into a collective stillness, where time unfolds slowly, tenderly, one drawing at a time.

One Drawing Per Day began as a ritual during isolation — one drawing each day, without expectation or end. What started as a form of survival slowly became a mirror of the artist’s inner world, recording fragments of dreams, moods, and passing thoughts.

Each line is a small gesture of authenticity, an attempt to meet oneself through repetition and reflection. Over time, these drawings began to breathe, forming their own quiet universe — inhabited by creatures and emotions that drift between joy and subconscious.

At Qi Shan Xia Yin, surrounded by books, forests, crops, and mountain air, the drawings found their home. They no longer belong to solitude, but to a shared rhythm — the space itself becomes a sketchbook, and every visitor, a reader.

The accompanying books and 3D printed vinyl sculptures extend this diary into touch and play, allowing drawing to slip into the dimension of life, where art becomes a way of being present, tender, and alive.
